SHAWNEE — Putnam City North scored two runs in the seventh inning to earn their first win, a 4-2 contest over 5A Shawnee Saturday (March 7).

“It was a good win, pitching and defense was really good except one play,” North coach Greg Johnson said via text. “Offensively we struggled to get much going but did enough to get the win.”

North broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh inning with a two-out rally.

Senior Reece Hubble was hit by a pitch. Fellow senior Robert Marcy ran for Hubble and stole second.

Senior Quincy Robinson lined a single to right field. Marcy scored on the throw for the 3-2 lead.

Robinson then went to second on a passed ball. Junior Treague Ferguson struck out but the ball got past the Shawnee catcher. Ferguson reached first safely and Robinson scored to make it 4-2.

The Panthers took the lead first in the fourth inning, scoring on a Shawnee error. The Wolves answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a North error.

The Panthers tied the game at 2-2 with a two-out rally in the fifth. Robinson walked, stole second and scored on a Shawnee error on a ball hit by Ferguson.

Robinson had a 2-for-3 day with two runs scored, a run batted in and two stolen bases.

Seniors Austin Guerrero and Hubble each had a hit.

Senior starter Xavier Sarkey ended up with a no-decision despite striking out eight batters over four innings. Sarkey allowed two hits and one earned run. He walked four.

Senior Alfredo Renteria earned in the win in relief by allowing one hit over the last three innings. Renteria struck out five batters and walked one.

UP NEXT

Putnam City North (1-2) opens 6A-4 play Monday (March 9) at Bixby.

The Spartans earned a 10-0 shutout of 3A Victory Christian on Saturday.
