OKLAHOMA CITY — Putnam City North rebounded after a slow start against Stillwater Saturday (Feb. 28) for a 66-52 win to capture the 6A East Regional 1 title.

North had starters sit out early in the game due to disciplinary issues.

“We had some, you know, some things we had to address, just holding people accountable,” Putnam City North coach Logan Martin said. “We just made a couple adjustments, and then kept it going.”

Before the adjustments, Stillwater took advantage with senior Khalia Moore scoring 10 points in the first quarter and the Pioneers holding a 18-15 lead.

“We just made a couple adjustments, and then kept it going,” Martin said.

Martin credited a “tough” Stillwater team for the rough start.

“I thought we just kind of found our rhythm, once we kind of… settled down a little bit and turned them over,” Martin said.

Midway through the second quarter, with the starters back on the court, the tide turned for North.

Stillwater had a 22-21 lead when the Panthers went on a 9-0 run.

“We’re a momentum team,” Martin said. “We start out hot and see it go in.
A lot of times it’s kind of a trickle effect. for everybody, and so I felt good after we had a little momentum.”

Senior Da’Nae Jefferson scored seven of her 14 points in the second quarter.

North led 30-22 at halftime.

The Pioneers hung around in the third quarter and had a chance to get within two points but the Panthers got a defensive stop. Senior Kiana Gray hurled a pass down the court for fellow senior Paige Williams who got the bucket and a foul. A slim 2-point lead turned into a 7-point lead.

WIlliams scored eight of her nine points in the third quarter.

“She’s kind of one of our floor generals and she sees the floor really well, and a lot of times it’s that extra pass,” Martin said of Williams. “She’s just kind of that grit player,”

Martin sees a benefit to the early scare.

“I’m kind of glad for the adversity, and just the girls having to play through some things they’re not used to,” Martin said.

Despite the reduction in playing time, North had three players in double figures.

Senior Jayla Constant scored 18 points and had seven rebounds. Constant had two assists, four steals and a blocked shot.

Jefferson coupled eight rebounds with her 14 points.

Senior Tehlia Kutsoati hit two 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. Kutsoati had three rebounds and four assists.

Senior Kiana Gray had only two points in the first half. She added six points in the fourth quarter, including a trey, and finished with eight points.

TIP-INS

  • Junior Demy Howard scored three points, grabbed three rebounds, had two assists and collected four steals.
  • Stillwater’s Moore finished with 18 points in the loss.
  • The win marks the second straight season the Panthers’ have won the regional championship.

UP NEXT

The Panthers (26-1) will face another 6A-3 opponent, this time in the 6A East Area 4 playoffs. North meets Broken Arrow (17-7) next Thursday (March 5) at 6 p.m. at Shawnee.

The Panthers beat Broken Arrow on the road 58-43 on Dec. 16 and scored a 62-27 home win on Jan. 30.

The Tigers have won seven straight games the second loss to North. Broken Arrow advanced to area with a 40-38 win over Tulsa Union.

North has won 19 straight games since a 66-51 loss to Bishop Gorman (Nev.) on Dec. 22 in the Jerry Tarkanian Classic.

Martin admits it’s “a little weird” to play two teams from their district in the playoffs.

“It’s hard to beat the team three times,” Martin said. “We try to challenge our girls, don’t get comfortable. We’ve seen a lot of upsets in other parts of the bracket and that we don’t want that to be us.”

With a win over Broken Arrow, North will earn a berth in the 6A state tournament to defend their 6A title from a season ago.
