SHAWNEE — The Putnam City West girls wrestling team secured a third-place overall finish at the 6A West Regional Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 16-17).
The Patriots finished the 38-team tournament with 141.5 points, trailing only Bixby and Westmoore. Five West athletes placed in the top five to secure automatic berths in next week’s state championship.
Sophomore Chloe Medlock (115 lbs) and senior Carli Antonelli (140 lbs) led the way as regional champions. Medlock won the 115-pound title in a sudden-victory over Noble’s Morgan Atherton, while Antonelli secured the 140-pound crown with a fall over Bixby’s Abbey Miller.
Tegan O’Connor added a runner-up finish for the Patriots at 155 pounds. Other state qualifiers for West included Carissa Martin, who took fourth at 110 pounds, and Emily Hamil, who placed fifth at 100 pounds.
Putnam City also saw success on the podium. Junior Tessalynn Goodner claimed third place at 190 pounds, pinning Yukon’s Gabriella Castro in the consolation finals to clinch her state tournament spot. Fellow junior Diamond Walker finished sixth at 170 pounds and will serve as the state alternate for that weight class.
Putnam City North senior Aubrey Brown qualified for state with a fourth-place finish at 125 pounds. During the tournament, Brown recorded her 100th career victory.
