OKLAHOMA CITY — Putnam City’s boys wrestling team won the school’s 14th straight Putnam City District Duals championship with wins over sister schools Putnam City West and Putnam City North Thursday (Jan. 8).

“I think our guys wrestled really well, aside from maybe two matches that we should have won,” Putnam City coach Mike Walkup said via text. “Our guys came in and took care of business and mostly by pin.”

Walkup said his squad takes a lot of pride in being top wrestling school in the district.

“PC High is a place that takes wrestling very seriously and should be a destination for any serious wrestler in the area,” Walkup said.

The squad is 11-2 in duals and 12th-ranked in 6A. The Pirates are atop the 6A-4 standings. They’ve also notched three top-6 finishes in tournament play.

“We had a record-high five state qualifiers last year and looking to continue that success,” Walkup said. “Our boys squad is led by Mike Hernandez, Frank Arriola, and Talon Hall.”

This year’s event was hosted by Putnam City West.

PIRATE GIRLS FINISH SECOND

Coming off having two placers at the SuperGirl 64 tournament in Tulsa, Putnam City fell to Putnam City West but beat Putnam City North in the district duals.

Walkup highlighted two-time state champion Tessa Goodner, a junior. He also highlighted senior Evelyn Gamas, a state qualifier a year ago..

Senior Nevaeh Rosewell finished fifth in her weight class at the SuperGirl 64.

“(The) Pirate ladies will also look to qualify multiple girls for the state tournament for the fifth year in a row,” Walkup said.
