Former Putnam City pitching standout Andrew Heaney announced his retirement from baseball Sunday (Dec. 28) in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“I played with many of the greatest players of this generation and potentially some of the best players to ever wear a uniform. I’m humbled that I was even able to share the field with them,” Heaney said in a statement.
Heaney was a first-round draft pick by the Florida Marlins in 2012. He made his Major League debut two seasons later. In 2015, he began a 6-year stint from the Los Angeles Angels. He later pitched with the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The lefthander signed with Texas before the 2023 season. The Rangers won the World Series that season, with Heaney making three starts during the postseason. He was the winning pitcher in game four of the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Heaney pitched five innings allowing only four hits and walking two. He allowed one earned run and struck out three batters in the Rangers’ 11-7 win.
After the two-year stint with the Rangers, Heaney split time in 2025 with Pittsburgh and the Dodgers.
During his two stints with the Dodgers, Heaney pitched six games for Triple-A affiliate Oklahoma City on injury rehab assignments in 2022 and 2025.
He finished his Major League career with a 56-72 record, a 4.57 ERA and 1,156 strikeouts.
Heaney cited the travel and time away from his family as a reason for his retirement.
“But I am now ready to return my focus and energy to being a husband, father, family man, and active member of my community,” Heaney said inthe statement. “I’m retiring from baseball, but I hope to give back more than I received. Thank you to all of you for the love and support you have given me. Y’all know who you are.”

With Putnam City, Heaney led the Pirates to a state tournament appearance in 2009. Coming into the state tournament, Heaney was 7-2, had a 1.32 ERA and 114 strikeouts over 69 innings. He improved from a 2.25 ERA for his junior year in Warr Acres.
Heaney was a 2009 All-State selection. He was inducted into the Putnam City Schools Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022.
Heaney signed with Oklahoma State where he was the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2012. He went 8-2 that season with a 1.60 ERA. Heaney led all of NCAA baseball with 114 strikeouts.
Heaney was also a unanimous All-America selection in his final season with the Cowboys.
