LAS VEGAS — Putnam City North sprinted away from Clayton Valley Charter (Calif.) in the second quarter en route to a 62-28 win Tuesday (Dec. 23) to finish third in the Jerry Tarkanian Classic.

North (8-1) led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter but stretched the lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Ugly Eagles 19-7 in the second quarter to lead 35-21 at halftime. The Panthers held CVC scoreless in the third quarter.

Senior Jayla Constant led North with 17 points, nine rebounds, two steals and a block. She was 3-of-4 from the 3-point line and 6-of-9 overall from the field.

Constant signed with UNLV which is just seven miles north of Silverado High School where most of the games were played.

Fellow senior Paige Williams added nine points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Williams was 3-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

North 8-of-18 from the 3-point line in the win. The Panthers shot just under 50 percent from the field.

North had 17 steals in the win, led by senior Kiana Gray’s five steals.

North (8-1) has a week off for Christmas before traveling to Dallas for the Dr. Pepper Holiday Invitational.

On Monday (Dec. 29) North plays two games. The Panthers have baskets for breakfast with an 8:30 a.m. tipoff against Denton Braswell (Texas). At 8:30 p.m., North finishes the split-shift with a matchup against Greenhill (Texas).

Denton Braswell is a 6A school and is 13-4. Greenhill (6-6) is in the Southwest Preparatory Conference, a group made up of private schools (Oklahoma City’s Casady used to be a member.)

Both games are at David Carter High School in Dallas.

Based on the standings of three-team pool, North will compete in a playoff with other teams in other pools Dec. 30 (based on what place they finish in their pool standings). On Dec. 31, the Panthers will compete for for a place (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) on the tournament’s final day.
