BETHANY — Despite not having its leading scorer and another contributor, Bethany cruised past Class A Southwest Covenant, 55-24 Thursday (Dec. 18).
Junior Camryn Regier went to celebrate Christmas with her grandparents. Senior Reese Harris “tweaked” her knee
Senior McKenna Calderon stepped into the leading scorer role. Calderon scored a game-high 21 points. She connected on five 3-pointers, going 5-of-8 from the 3-point line.
Calderon also had six rebounds, an assist and four steals.
“McKenna shot the ball really well! Proud of her,” Bethany coach Eric Sailer said via text.
Fellow junior Ali Linn added 13 points. Linn had 10 rebounds, four assists, three block and a steal.
As a team, the Bronchos struggled from the field, hitting 19 of 68 shots (28 percent). Bethany out-rebounded the Patriots 39-16.
The Broncho defense had 18 steals and took advantage of 27 SWC turnovers.
Southwest Covenant shot 19 percent from the field
Despite the absence of the two key players, Sailer was pleased with the effort.
“I was proud of our team. Our program is built on the acronym STANCE. Success Through Adversity No Complaints or Excuses.
“The girls faced adversity right in the face and made the most of their opportunity,” Sailer said.
