MADILL — In an unusual lame duck regular season finale, Bethany thumped winless Madill, 57-0 Friday (Nov. 7) at Blake Smiley Stadium.

Other games Friday determined the Bronchos’ spot in the playoffs since Madill was disqualified from the playoffs. Because of that fact, any 4A-2 game with the Wildcats didn’t count in the standings.

Blanchard’s 38-7 win over Chickasha put the Lions in third place despite losing to the Bronchos Oct. 3. The three-way tie between Bethany, Blanchard and Harrah was broken by district points. Blanchard finished with 21 points. Bethany had -1 to earn a playoff berth. Harrah finished at -25, which kept them out of the playoffs.

It was expected that the Bronchos might rest some starters in the second half after expecting a lopsided win. But, Bethany coach Jon Arthur wanted to see his players play well.

“It ended up being a good trip,” Arthur said via phone.”We did what we needed to do tand and kind of got rolling. Played well on both sides of football.”

Seven different players scored for Bethany. Junior quarterback Brody McLaren had two touchdown runs and a touchdown pass.

The Bronchos scored four times in the first quarter. A running clock was used later in the game due to the lopsided score.

The Bethany defense earned its first shutout of the season.

“The defensive  line guys did a great job stopping the run” Arthur said.

Arthur said he wanted the backups and younger players to get experience playing “under the lights” in game situations.

“We didn’t have as many games this year where (the backups) got to do that maybe as we did a year ago, Arthur said. “Even just a few reps can be valuable for them going forward, just kind of seeing the game, at that speed and playing in that atmosphere.”
