BETHANY — Bethany advanced to its first super regional (or area tournament) since 2011 with a 9-2 regional title win over Byng Friday (Oct. 3).

“Super proud of our girls,” Bethany coach Booker Blakley said via text. “Thought the girls were locked in from the beginning.”

The Pirates took a 1-0 lead after they loaded the bases after senior Jayda Davis hit a batter, allowed a single and a walk. Byng junior Piper Presley scored on a ground ball by freshman Kodie Pinley and the bases were still loaded.

Jayda Davis induced the next batter to pop out to herself and then another pop out to junior shortstop Jules Barger to end the inning.

“I thought we did a good job getting out of that situation only allowing one run,” Blakley said.

Bethany answered in the bottom of the inning.

Junior Emma Geissler reached on an infield error. Fellow junior Grey Williamson was hit by a pitch. Senior Berkley Johnson moved the runners to second and third on a ground ball.

Fellow senior Emma Buxton singled to left field to score two runs and give the Bronchos a 2-1 lead.

“The fact that we were able to immediately answer in the bottom helped out a lot for sure,” Blakley said. “Buxton stepped up well there.”

In the fifth inning, Bethany extended the lead with a two-out double from Geissler, which scored Barger, who had doubled to lead off the inning. Williamson singled to right field to score Geissler and the lead was 4-1.

Byng added a run in the sixth. Presley was hit by a pitch again and scored on a groundout two batters later and Bethany led, 4-2.

The Bronchos pulled away with a bang in the sixth inning

Senior Maddison McNutt and Barger each reached on an error. Then, freshman Rian Rollins lined a 1-2 pitch over the center field wall for a three-run home run.

“The ball she hit may never have gotten more than about 10 feet off the ground,” Blakley said. “It was one of the harder balls I’ve seen hit in my career.”

Bethany added two more runs in the inning after junior Ella Davis singled, Williamson doubled and a Johnson singled to make it 9-2.

Jayda Davis scattered five hits over seven innings. She walked one batter and struck out three.

“I thought Jayda did a wonderful job in the circle. She worked her way out of that jam in the second only giving up one and then kept them off balance most of the day,” Blakley said. “Once again, I believe our pitching staff gives us a great chance against anyone.”

The Broncho offense collected nine hits in the win.

Rollins and Williamson each went 2-for-3. Barger, Ella Davis, Geissler, Johnson and Buxton each had a hit.
