BETHANY — Both the boys and girls Broncho cross country squads had top five finishes at the Bethany Broncho Invitational Friday (Sept. 6) at Eldon Lyon Park.
The girls team placed second behind Southwest Covenant.
“I thought all the girls ran so great,” Bethany coach Zac Coulson said via text. “I am really excited to see the improvement the girls keep making every week! I truly believe they are a top 5 team in 4A.”
Freshman Morgan McNutt finished third with a time of 12:42.6. Sophomore Shayne Vonfeldt added a seventh place finish in 12:58.1. Freshman Kayden Wright was 20th with a time of 13:37.3.
Other top finishers included junior Ava League (22nd/13:54.6) and senior Maddison McNutt (33rd/13:54.6).
The boys squad landed in fifth place. Junior Artur Calderon was 14th in 17:58. Sophomore Salyer Stayton was 17th and had a time of 18:02.5.
“Artur and Salyer ran with a lot of heart,” Coulson said.
Other top finishers included junior Clay Powell (33rd/19:26.3), sophomore Aiden Donoghue (3th/19:29.4) and Antonio Hernandez (46th/19:55.6)
“Clay and Aiden, I thought looked strong and I loved they stuck together,” Coulson said. “And Tony looks to be getting more comfortable with racing a 5k each race.”
Coulson said preparing to host a meet requires a lot of work.
“I was really proud of the kids this week,” Coulson said. “And, I take responsibility as their coach that I kept them on their legs too much on Thursday.
“Next year, I will be better with giving them more time at home to rest and not wear their legs out the night before a race. I told them I take responsibility for probably feeling heavy legged and tired, I kept them on their legs too much.”
Coulson said it was hard to watch a whole race with hosting duties
“What I saw I was incredibly proud of their effort and that’s all I ask from them.”
