BOSTON — Bethany alum Payton Tolle pitched five shutout innings in his major league debut but got a no-decision in the Red Sox’ 4-2 loss to Pittsburgh Friday (Aug. 29).

Tolle described the experience to the Associated Press.

“Chills. A lot of chills, It was incredible. I came off the mound after the first and I couldn’t feel my feet.”

Tolle, who was called up from Triple-A Worcester Thursday, took a one-hit shutout into the sixth before running into trouble and giving up back-to-back singles. That led to two runs for the Pirates to tie the game.

Tolle, who played at Wichita State and Texas Christian after graduating from Bethany in 2021, scattered three hits over 5 1/3 innings.

The AP reported that Tolle was the first Boston pitcher to strike out eight or more batters in his major league debut since Daisuke Matsuzaka struck out 10 in 2007.

Tolle walked two in the contest.

The moment came less than five months after Tolle made his professional debut with the Greenville Drive in the Single-A’s South Atlantic League.
