SHAWNEE — Bethany’s girls golf team finished as the Class 4A State Runner-Up after heavy rains shortened the tournament at Shawnee Country Club.

The Bronchos shot a 364 (80 combined over par) after the opening round Monday (May 5), just behind Fort Gibson, who shot a 355 (+71). Storms moved in and the course was deemed “unplayable,” cancelling the second day scheduled for Tuesday and making the first round results the final results.

“I’m really impressed with this team and how we finished this year,” Bethany coach Ryley Claborn said via text. “This is the first time in almost 20 years we have made it to the State Tournament, and to walk away with a runner-up caps off a spectacular season.

“I would’ve definitely loved a chance to win it all, but where we ended up is still a massive accomplishment. We told the girls (Monday) morning that we might not play (Tuesday), so we needed to go post a number and we did just that.”

Senior Addi Hoefar finished in a tie for seventh with Clinton’s Grace Meacham with a score of 83 (+12). Her performance earned her All-State honors.

“Addi played well and battled,” Claborn said. “She had some struggles on some tricky holes but bounced back well and was in a great headspace all day long.

“It was a big goal of hers to be an All-Stater, and she accomplished those goals this week! I’m very proud of her and our other senior, Jacquelynne Self, for paving the way for the future of Bethany golf!”

Self shot a 97 (+26) to finish 33rd.

Junior Drew Jacobson had an 89 (+18) to land in a tie for 12th place with Fort Gibson’s Audrey Cooper.

Fellow junior McKenna Calderon added a 95 (+24) in a four-way tie for 27th place.

Another junior, Emma Buxton, followed with a 110 (+39) to finish 62nd.
