ELBERTA, Ala. — Putnam City North gave up eight runs in the third inning in an 11-3 loss to Ashland Blazer (Ky.) Monday (March 17) in the Gulf Coast Classic II.

The Panthers (1-7) issued five walks, hit two batters and gave up back-to-back doubles to the Tomcats in the big inning. The outburst gave the Kentucky school a 10-0 lead.

North answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Quincy Robinson singled senior Rocco Carattini in. Carattini walked to lead off the inning. Senior Aaron Wall singled to right field, scoring junior Austin Guerrero, who had been hit by a pitch. An outfield error scored Robinson to make it 10-3.

Robinson finished with a 2-for-3 day. He scored once and drove in a run. The Panthers were held without an extra-base hit and struck out 12 times in the loss.

Senior Geoffry Schmid took the loss. He allowed six runs on two hits in 2 2/3 innings. Schmid walked six and struck out four batters.

Junior Alfredo Renteria pitched the final 3 1/3 innings. He allowed five hits and five runs (but only one run was earned). Renteria walked two and struck out two batters.

North meets another Oklahoma school, 2A Tushka (3-3), in the second day of the festival Tuesday (March 18) at 11:30 a.m.

The Tigers fell to Lawrence County (Tenn.), 5-2, Monday.
