The Putnam City West baseball squad has a new coach but a familiar last name as the Patriots look continue the momentum after going 15-17 a season ago.
Grason Wright takes over the team from his brother Garen Wright who led the baseball team for two years.
Like his brother, Grason Wright is a Putnam City graduate. Grason Wright went on to pitch at Seminole State and then at Division I Lamar.
Under Garen Wright last season, the Patriots’ 15 wins was the most since 2019 (11 wins) and the West’s best season in 20+ years.
In 2024, the Patriots went 4-0 against Putnam City and Putnam City North. West managed a win over Lawton in between losses to Mustang in the regional playoffs.
“Talented group of baseball kids, looking to improve on last year’s high note,” Grason Wright told West Metro Sports via a preseason questionnaire. “We are young with only four upperclassmen that will be starting in the field, but as the year goes on and the experience adds up we will be a tough ball club to beat.
“The kids have worked hard all fall and winter to come out and compete day one of the season. Looking forward to what these young athletes achieve this year.”
The returners for West include senior 6-foot-3 utility player and pitcher Nathan Vann.
“(Nathan is) looking to go out with a bang,” Grason Wright said of the two-year starter. “He has made a huge impact since arriving. He’s looking to improve and move onto college baseball next year.”
Vann Nate had combined 30+ extra base hits and seven home runs over the past two years at West.
Senior catcher Marshall Byers, a team captain also returns.
“Marshall is looking to finish his high school career strong. Does everything the coaches ask of him, and looking to guide this group of young guys to wins,” Grason Wright said.
Sophomore Aaron De Loera makes the move to shortstop after starting at third base as a freshman.
“He’s more mature and stronger this year looking to turn some heads. Solid glove, made one error as a freshman starting every game,” Grason Wright said.
Another sophomore with starting experience as a freshman is utulity player Alex Jimenez.
“Alexended the year strong and looking to improve on last year’s performance. Great athlete, with an athletic swing,” Grason Wright said.
Other returners include sophomore pitcher Mike Vess and junior outfielder Ezequiel Hernandez.
Newcomers to the team include freshman center fielder Cadence Smith, freshman utility player Malachi Ferguson, sophomore infielder Angel Perez and senior utility player Luis Enriquez.
“Huge thank you to the alumni for their donations and participation this year with our team,” Grason Wright said.
