
PONCA CITY – Putnam City North won its season opener with a 2-0 shutout of Ponca City Saturday (March 1).
The Panthers broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with a leadoff single by Jones, Rocco Carratini bunted to the third base line and Jones came around to score on an error by Ponca City first Isaiah Branstetter.
In the fourth inning, Jonathan Lopez doubled to left field and came home on a two-out single by Jones to center field.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, two walks gave the Wildcats an opportunity to tie the game. Kalon Covey singled with two outs to North right fielder Treague Ferguson, who threw out Blake Orozco at the plate to end the game.
North starter Geoffry Schmid allowed one hit in 5 1/3 innings. The senior struck out four batters and walked five. Robinson earned the save by pitching the final 1 2/3 innings. He allowed a hit, walked two batter and struck out two.
Junior Xayvion Jones went 2-of-3 with an RBI. Quincy Robinson also went 2-for-3 and stole two bases.
