OKLAHOMA CITY — Putnam City West couldn’t overcome a second quarter surge and Westmoore’s Barnard twins in a 57-47 loss Tuesday (Jan. 14) in a 6A-3 contest.

West fell despite 23 points from Scyon Wilborn. The freshman drilled five 3-pointers in the first half and added another one in the third quarter. Wilborn scored all nine points for West en route to a 9-9 tie after the first quarter.

“He kept us in the game,” Putnam City West coach Brian Booker said of Wilborn. “If he doesn’t hit those shots, we’re not in the game at all.”

Booker said it “was big” for Wilborn to play that way against competition like Westmoore but he wasn’t surprised that the newcomer didn’t shy away from the challenge.

“He’s old and wise. He works hard. He is in the gym all the time,” Booker said. “He’s a gym rat. When you’re in the gym all the time, this is easy when it comes to the game. The lights don’t bother you, don’t matter how old you are.”

Jaguar seniors Garrett Barnard and Grant Barnard also weren’t bothered by the lights. Grant scored 18 points and Garrett added 15 points.

Trailing 38-29 going into the fourth quarter, the West offense started to get going but the Patriots couldn’t get defensive stops even while pressing.

“(Westmoore is) probably the most physical team we’ll play besides Owasso,” Booker said. “They made plays and we didn’t. We didn’t get the ball moving on offense like we should have. We missed some wide open shots that we usually hit.”

West junior DJ Carter added eight points and fellow junior Damari Coleman finished with seven points.

The Patriots (3-6, 2-2 in district play) travel to Muskogee (1-6, 1-3) Friday (Jan. 17) at 7:30 p.m.

The Roughers fell Tuesday to Tulsa Union, 72-51.

“They’re young like us,” Booker said of Muskogee. “They’re gonna play hard, but we gotta match their intensity. It’s a district game, so there’s no excuse.”
