MUSTANG – Putnam City North upended Edmond North, 50-41, Friday (Dec. 27). The win denied the Lady Huskies’ bid for a fourth-straight Bank 7 Mustang Holiday Classic Championship.

It also put the Lady Panthers (12-1) in the title game for the first time. Their opponent Saturday (Dec. 28) is Bixby. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

Putnam City North started fast, sprinting out to a 19-7 lead after the first quarter. Edmond North (4-4) narrowed the gap in the second quarter and stayed within striking distance for the middle two quarters.

The Lady Huskies cut the PC North lead to 40-37 with 5:08 left in the game.

Aggressive offense helped the Lady Panthers pull away.

Junior Kiana Gray drove to the bucket, drawing the foul, getting the score and hitting a free throw for a 3-point play. Geretta followed with a floater to extend the lead to eight points (45-37) with 3:22 left.

An Edmond North turnover led to senior Nkaiya Dillard sprinting down the court for a bucket and drawing the foul. Her free throw made it 48-37 with 2:56 left.

“We played much better defensively tonight. I thought our intensity was better on the defensive end,” Putnam City North coach Logan Martin said via text. “We are really proud of our girls for battling during a really physical game.”

The Lady Panthers forced 20 Edmond North turnovers in the win.

Senior Brandie Harrod had nine points and five rebounds. Gray also had nine points in the win.

Putnam City North shot 37 percent from the field in the game (and 50 percent in the second half).

“I felt like our shot selection was much better tonight. We were more disciplined offensively,” Martin said.

The Lady Panther win marks the first time Edmond North isn’t in the Mustang Holiday Classic title game since 2019. The Lady Huskies had won three tournament titles in a row and have won four titles total since the event began in 2018.

It also marks the first time Putnam City North is in the tournament title game. The Lady Panthers’ previous highest finish was a third-place win in 2021.
