WARR ACRES – With a Putnam City alum on each team’s bench, the Pirates clobbered U.S. Grant, 80-36, Tuesday (Dec. 17) capping off Alumni Night at the school.
First-year Putnam City coach Brandon Jackson, a 2008 PC grad, and first year Grant coach Xavier Henry, a 2009 grad, highlighted several alumni in attendance including some that are still involved with the school.
At halftime, the school honored the widow of legendary Putnam City coach A.D. Burtschi, Jacque Burtschi.
A.D. Burtschi coached at Putnam City for 32 years before retiring in 2016. He died in 2019.
Like many Burtschi teams that played in the same gym, the Pirates rolled up a dominant win.
Putnam City (7-1, 4-0) led the 6A-1 contest nearly from start to finish. After a 2-2 start and a couple of one-point PC leads in the first quarter, the Pirates pulled away before a 35-9 third quarter put the game well out of reach.
Like his late mentor, Jackson wasn’t completely satisfied despite the lopsided score.
“We didn’t play our best, but we picked it up in the second half, but we we came out lackadaisical. We found a way to win,” Jackson said.
Senior JaColby Williams scored a game-high 24 points – one of four Pirates in double figures.
“He shot the ball really well,” Jackson said of Williams. “He’s been coming along the last three or four games, shooting out a very high percentage and leading by example.”
Sophomore Daylan Williamson came off the bench in the fourth quarter and hit three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. Fellow sophomore Miles Jackson had 12 points as did senior Kelton Locke.
