CHICKASHA – Despite offensive struggles, Bethany’s defense was enough for a 43-28 win over Chickasha Tuesday (Dec. 17) in a Western Athletic Conference contest.
“It was an ugly win,” Bethany coach Brett Cannon said via text. “Chickasha did a good job of keeping us out of rhythm. Slowed the game way down. We attempted to speed it up but got four fouls in the first minute of the game so had to cut back a little.”
The Bethany (2-3, 2-0) defense forced turnovers and held the Fightin’ Chicks to single digits point totals in each of the first three quarters, including only two points in the third quarter.
The 11-2 run in the third quarter transformed an 8-point game (21-13) into a comfortable 32-15 lead.
“Their defense really got after us, there’s no doubt. They’re really physical, too,” Chickasha coach Roger Raper told the Chickasha Express-Star.
“Was proud of our defense, we just need to be able to put the ball in the hoop,” Cannon said.
Cannon said his squad missed around 10 layups and floaters.
“Have to find a way to get those to go down more frequently,” Cannon said.
Cannon said the offensive performance may be due to his team getting more experience after most of his team was gone during Bethany’s football playoff run
“We’ve had five games and only five practices and it’s still showing but at some point we have to move past that and it’s on me to figure it out and get us back to looking sharp and executing at a high level,” Cannon said.
Senior Aiden Todd scored a game-high 14 points with two first quarter 3-pointers. Senior Lukas Wooldridge and Jackie Payne each scored seven points in the win.
Cannon also highlighted senior Braxton Mullins for “some great minutes” including a big 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.
The Bethany coach also praised junior Denton Jaggers for his work “on the boards and defending.”
