WARR ACRES – Putnam City shined on Alumni Night, beating U.S. Grant, 92-35, Tuesday (Dec. 17) in a 6A-1 contest.

The Lady Pirates (3-2, 2-1) scored the first 24 points of the game and led from start to finish.

“I thought it was a good win,” Putnam City coach Porsche’ Young said. “I thought that they did a lot of good things today.”

The Lady Generals (4-2, 1-2) entered the game with a district win over Southmoore after finishing last season with a 12-game losing streak.

At halftime, Putnam City’s lead widened slightly to 27 points (42-15).

In the third quarter, junior Promise Wright scored 11 of her game-high 23 points with three 3-pointers and PC’s lead increased to 50 points (77-27).

Wright was one of five Lady Pirates in double figures, including sophomore I’leeya Combs (18), seniors Paishintz Booker (17), Destinee Hunt (14) and Kayla Hill (14).

PC shooters hit nine treys (four from Wright) for the game.

The only weakness in Putnam City’s performance was at the free throw line. The Lady Pirates hit 5-of-13 from the stripe in the win.

“I think it’s a good tempo going into Friday night, which would be a a bigger game, a bigger fish to fry for us going into Mustang,” Young said.

Young, a 2010 Putnam City graduate, enjoyed seeing fellow alumni and seeing key people in school’s basketball history honored.

“I’m always down for celebrating Putnam City,” Young said. “I breathe Putham City, I bleed orange if you ask me.

“So, to have everybody here, everybody back showing the culture and just having that vibe for Putnam City, I love it,” Young said.

Playing on the A.D. Burtschi Court in what is now known as the “B” gym or “east” gym was a plus for Young, who played on this floor in high school.

“This is where everything went on for us. This is our home court. This is something that we take extreme pride in, so just being able to come back to our home court and be able to celebrate with our players now is so special.”
