NORMAN – Putnam City came back after a slow start to beat Norman North, 43-39, Tuesday (Dec. 10) in a 6A-1 contest.
“I don’t think I ever been more proud of a team in one particular game,” Putnam City coach Brandon Jackson said via text. “They trusted every single word I said throughout the game. It wasn’t pretty at all but we found a way to give ourselves a chance to win and we pulled it up.”
The Pirates (3-1, 2-0) fell into a 12-2 after the first quarter after Norman North junior Hezakiah Green hit two 3-pointers (part of his game-high 16 points).
Putnam City crawled back thanks to junior Z’Marion Fros who scored all five of his points in the quarter.
Jackson said Frost’s was key to staying close with the Timberwolves.
Senior Johnn Sheffey also scored all five of his points in the second quarter and Putnam City trailed 19-16 at halftime.
“Johnn comes in and our defensive energy and effort goes up to another level,” Jackson said of Sheffey. ” (He) doesn’t care if he scores or not. Just wants to help the team win.”
Trailing 33-29 after three quarters, seniors JaColby Williams, Kelton Locke and sophomore Mar’Quell Robinson combined for 13 points in the Pirates’ fourth quarter rally for the win.
“Norman North is extremely well coached by Kellen McCoy who is one of the best coaches in the state,” Jackson said. “For us to compete and win the game says a lot about our young men.”
