The Lady Pirates (2-1) led from start to finish, getting out to a 15-0 lead from the opening tip.
Senior Destinee Hunt led all scorers with 25 points.
“(Destinee) did great on the offensive and the defensive ends, going hard, finishing at the rim, getting defensive stops.”
Junior Promise Wright added 13 points with two 3-pointers. Sophomore I’Leeya Combs finished with 10 points.
West (0-3) continued its tough start with a brand-new roster after players graduated and others transferred following a 6A title win last season.
“A lot of girls haven’t even played competitive basketball before,” Putnam City West coach Kennedi Simien said. “I’m asking them to do a lot of things they’ve never even heard of before.”
The first-year coach said she is looking for effort as her inexperienced squad learns.
“I thought the first half they competed. Every game right now I’m just telling them don’t let anybody out working. go out and compete, do what do what you can,” Simien said.
Junior Kimyia Bullard and sophomore Kymora Brown are the only two Lady Patriots with some experience.
Bullard is the only member of the team who played on last year’s team.
Bullard finished with eight points and Brown added seven points in the loss.
“Those two, I feel like they play well, they compete. and that’s all I’m really asking for them to do right now is compete,” Simien said.
