Defending 6A state champion Putnam City West will have some different faces on the roster and a new coach as it looks to defend its title.

West will have a new coach after Ja’Ron Jefferson left for the boys basketball post at Yukon.

Assistant coach Kennedi Simien takes over the reins.

Simien played collegiately at Division II Cameron and was a graduate assistant there. Besides her role at West last season, Simien was an assistant at NAIA school Oklahoma City.

“I’m feeling optimistic about this season,” Simien said via preseason questionnaire. “While we’re a young and inexperienced team, we’re hungry to learn and committed to playing with energy and effort. It’s all about growth and building for the future!”

Junior guard Kimyia Bullard (5’5′) returns for the Lady Patriots.

“Kimyia is looking to use the experience she’s gained the last two season to transition into a leader for this season,” Simien said.

Also returning is sophomore combo guard Kymora Brown (5’7′).

“Kymora is young, but confidant and willing to help lead our team the best way she can,” Simien said. “She’s capable of scoring at all three levels and a strong rebounder.”

Senior Zoe Rogers (5’4″) is another returnee.

“Zoe may not be the biggest, but she plays with the biggest heart. A menace on defense!” Simien said.

The Lady Patriots also have a pair of freshman guards in sisters Amanda and Carolina Quiroz Fuentes (each 5’5″)

“These sisters are two grit players that play hard and play with no fear,” Simien said. “They’ll contribute a lot for us this upcoming season.”

The squad will have to fill the roles of several players who left for other schools in the offseason including Jayla Constant, Da’Nae Jefferson, Kiana Gray and Jazzlin Brown. Caya Smith also graduated and is now playing at OU. Shamar Bert also graduated from the championship squad.

West opens the season Tuesday (Dec. 3) on the road at Ponca City (8-18 last season. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
