OKLAHOMA CITY – Sand Springs sprinted out to an early lead and kept fifth-ranked Putnam City North at arm’s length in a 42-26 win in an important 6A-II-2 matchup Friday (Nov. 1).
With the win, the fourth-ranked Sandites solidified their spot in second place behind top-ranked Muskogee.
Sand Springs scored three touchdowns in the first half, ending a streak of three straight games where the Panthers hadn’t given up a touchdown.
Just before halftime, North got on the board when junior Mason Jones connected with fellow junior Bravion Stubbs for a 13-yard touchdown pass. North trailed, 21-6, with :28 before half.
After the break, the Panthers mounted a 13-play, 70-yard drive, capped off by a 1-yard run by senior Milton Alford. For the second straight time, the extra point was missed and Sand Springs’ lead was 21-12.
From that point, each team traded scores, with Alford scoring again in the third quarter on a 33-yard run.
North also got a 28-yard touchdown catch from senior Lewis Moreland with 5:50 left in the game.
Each time, the Sandites had an answer.
Sand Springs sophomore Dominic Forbes scored on a 1-yard run (his fourth touchdown of the night) to extend the lead to 42-26.
Jones was intercepted by Sandite junior Brock O’Dell at the Sand Springs 44-yard line to give the Sandites the win.
