SAPULPA – A fourth quarter score and big defensive stops by Putnam City North was enough to beat Sapulpa, 7-3, Friday (Oct. 25) in a 6A-II-2 game.
Trailing 3-0 early in the final period, Panther senior Kameron Oliver took a direct snap and moved to the short side of the field. It was bottled up so he reversed the field, evading two Chieftain defenders. Oliver sprinted to the goal line before being tripped up and leaping into the end zone for the game’s only touchdown, a 26-yard run with 11:27 left in the game. North led, 7-3.
Neither team sustain a drive. The Chieftains threatened after junior Kade Buxton picked off North junior Mason Jones at the North 49-yard line with 4:29 left.
Sapulpa drove to the North 20-yard line and faced a fourth down. Sophomore Braddox Broughton completed a short pass but senior Kelvin Tucker tackled the receiver short of the first down marker. The ball turned over on downs back to North with 2:29 left in the game.
North drove to the Sapulpa 40-yard line but couldn’t convert on fourth down, giving the Chieftains another chance with 1:19 left.
North junior Bishop Moore sealed the win with an interception with :51 left in the contest.
Before the second half defensive heroics, the Panthers stopped Sapulpa inside the North 1-yard line in the second quarter to preserve the scoreless tie.
