Putnam City alum Steve Largent has done a lot of things in his life and career: high school sports star, All-American wide receiver at the University of Tulsa, Pro Football Hall of Famer after a lengthy NFL career and U.S. congressman.

On Friday (Oct. 25) Largent will add another milestone. He will be the first player to have his jersey retired (82) by the Pirates during a halftime ceremony at Pirate Stadium during the Putnam City-Stillwater game.

Honors like this aren’t new to Largent. The Golden Hurricane retired his number (83) and the Seattle Seahawks did as well (80). The 1972 graduate was in in the inaugural class of the Putnam City School District’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019.

Largent played for legendary Putnam City coach Jerry Potter, who later led Original to three state titles.

Potter told The Oklahoman in 1986: “As far as his work habits and just being a solid person went, he was a great influence being around other kids and around the coaches, also. He was a great, hard-working kid. He was just one of that kind you love to have.”

Besides his pass catching ability, Largent was also prolific defensive back as well.

The Pirates wouldn’t win their first football state title until two years after Largent graduated, but Largent did play on Putnam City’s 1972 State Champion baseball team.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. between the Pirates and Pioneers in a big 6A-II-1 matchup.
