Plenty of Panthers had a part in North’s second half surge to a 42-28 win over Ponca City Friday (Oct. 4) in 6A-II 2 action.

Senior Milton Alford rushed 27 times for 157 yards and two scores. Fellow senior Dameon Hardmon added 64 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Mason Jones completed 12-of-17 for 131 yards. The junior had one touchdown and one interception.

Putnam City North coach Derek Lane highlighted Jones’ ability to adapt to different scenarios.

“(Jones) did a good job as far as finding some receivers downfield but then also whenever there weren’t no receivers open, he was able to scramble, get out of the pocket and convert, convert some first downs for us as well,” Lane said via phone.

Junior Bravion Stubbs was Jones’ biggest target with five catches and 80 yards with a score.

Senio Kelvin Tucker led the defense with 11 sacks and one tackle for loss. Fellow senior Kyrie Caldwell added 10 tackles and two tackles for loss. Caldwell also forced a fumble.

Hardmon was a force on the defensive side of the ball also with 10 tackles.

Junior Jarrett Rogers, Jr. finished with eight tackles in the win and fellow junior Bishop Moore had six tackles and an interception.

Moore had another interception wiped out due to a North penalty.

Lane also highlighted senior Kyran Axtell who forced a fumble by stripping a Ponca player by sticking with a play after the Wildcats had a big run.

NEXT OPPONENT: Capitol Hill

The Panthers (4-1, 2-0) return home Friday (Oct. 11) for Homecoming against Capitol Hill (1-4, 0-2).

The Redwolves have been outscored 217-53 but have not been shut out in a game so far.

“It shouldn’t really matter who we’re playing. Or the score,” Lane said. “We’re just worried about making sure that we’re executing our offense and our defense and not really worrying about our opponent because at times if you start to do that, you can play down to the other team’s level.”
