CHOCTAW – Putnam City’s offense struggled and Choctaw took advantage of good field position early to rout the Pirates, 54-14, Friday (Oct. 4) in a 6A-II District 1 matchup.

After the Pirates failed to convert on a fourth-down play on the their first possession and then followed that up with a short punt, Choctaw took the field position inside Putnam City territory for a 12-0 lead.

PC’s third possession stalled as the Pirates couldn’t keep defenders out of their backfield and this time senior Jayden Henson booted the punt into Choctaw territory. The Yellowjackets responded with a 13-play drive, capped off by a 14-yard score by Choctaw’s Mayor Morgan.

The drive was kept alive on a fourth down play at the Pirate 19-year line when Original was whistled for an offsides penalty.

The Yellowjacket junior finished with 173 yards on the ground.

Pirate senior Tobias Braddy gave PC good field position on the ensuing kickoff, returning the ball 40 yards to the Choctaw 45, but again nothing was happening offensively for Putnam City.

The Yellowjackets scored two more times before halftime to build a 34-0 lead at the intermission.

After Choctaw drove for a touchdown on the opening series of the second half to make it 40-0, the Pirates moved the ball to their own 40-yard line but penalties killed the drive. Henson’s punt was blocked and recovered by Choctaw junior Dajon Green, who sprinted into the end zone to make it 47-0.

The Pirates had switched from starter, junior Joshua Lombard to sophomore Denymn Friday at quarterback.

The PC offense finally sustained a drive with Friday connecting with junior Visanio Boyd, Jr. for a 20-yard catch on third down and junior Savion James for a 13-yard completion for another third down conversion.

Friday and Boyd connected for a nine-yard score with one second left in the third quarter to get the Pirates on the scoreboard.

With reserves playing, Choctaw added another score after getting a short field from the kickoff to make it 54-7 with 6:09 left.

Once again James and Boyd added chunk plays in the next drive for PC. Friday hit senior Demarion Ridley for a 28-yard touchdown to finish the scoring.

Choctaw scored on all of their possessions but their last possession with the game decided.
