OKLAHOMA CITY – Carl Albert overwhelmed an overmatched Western Heights squad with a 64-0 blowout of the Jets Friday (Sept. 27) in the 5A-2 opener for both teams.

The defending state champion and 5A power Titans scored five times in the first quarter and the rout was on.

“Carl Albert is an extremely talented team with great leadership and athletes,” Western Heights coach Travis Burdine said via text. “It was a game our team needed to play to help us understand what district and competition is like in 5A.”

On the game’s final possession, Western Heights drove into Carl Albert territory. Senio Elyn McGilbra connected with sophomore Jeremy Tash for a 22-yard pass. A penalty on the Titans moved the ball to the Carl Albert 28-yard line. On the untimed final play, McGilbra’s pass fell incomplete to end the game.

Burdine said several newcomers got experience playing in the game as some of the Jets’ key players were out due to injury.

“As a coach I’m glad our team stepped up with the guys we had,” Burdine said. “The score wasn’t a victory for us this week but the morale and confidence that they showed speaks highly of the changes that is going on here at Western Heights.”

Western Heights (1-3, 0-1) travels to Altus (1-3, 0-1) to meet the Bulldogs next Friday (Oct. 4). Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Altus dropped a 36-31 decision at El Reno Friday (Sept. 27).
