WARR ACRES – Putnam City lost twice on the opening day of its own Putnam City Festival Thursday (Sept. 19).

The Lady Pirates fell despite outhitting the Irish and a two-run surge in the final inning.

Trailing 2-0 in the third inning, sophomore Natalie Luevano led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. She moved to a second on a groundout. Fellow sophomore Samantha Tidmore struck out but the ball got away from the McGuinness catcher, who threw to first but the first baseman couldn’t handle it, scoring Luevano to make it 2-1.

The Irish answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 4-1 score.

In the fifth, junior Dahlia Hickerson’s two-run single with two outs pulled the Lady Pirates within a run. Sophomore Alexandra Hatleilid struck out to end the game.

PONCA CITY 7, PUTNAM CITY 1

Ponca City scored six runs in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie.

The Lady Pirates lone run came in the third inning. With one out, Luevano walked. She advanced to second base and then third base on passed balls. Tidmore bunted and reached on an error, scoring Luevano.

Tidmore, Bourbonnais, Hickerson, Hatleilid and Meza each had hits in the loss.

The Putnam City festival continues Friday (Sept. 20) as the Lady Pirates face Putnam City West at 5 p.m.
