OKLAHOMA CITY – Putnam City North started fast offensively and Lady Panther Angel Franklin struck out 12 in a 9-2 rout of Putnam City Monday (Sept. 16).
The Lady Panthers (6-12) didn’t waste time against their sister school and rival, scoring three runs in the first inning highlighted by a triple by senior Monica Coats.
North added single runs in the both second and third inning. The Lady Panthers had 12 hits in the win and took advantage of two errors and other miscues by Original.
Putnam City North coach D’Antae Mitchell said he encouraged his team to be aggressive at the plate.
“Just stop watching strikes, man, and I told them, I said, hey, we gotta take some hacks and it’s okay, you know, if you strike out,” Mitchell said.
Every North starter got a hit in the contest. Monica Coats went 3-for-3, driving in three runs. Her sister, junior Mikala Coats was 2-for-3.
Franklin was perfect for four innings, not allowing a baserunner. In the fifth, Pirate sophomore Madi Gossman led off the inning with a single to right field. Fellow sophomore Francis Meza grounded to North Raya Shawareb at shortstop. Shawareb stepped on second base for an out but Meza reached first safely.
The senior pitcher induced a pop-up to North sophomore catcher Savannah Martinez and a groundout to end the inning.
With North leading 7-0 In the sixth, junior Jayda Stevenson relieved Franklin and ran into trouble. PC scored two runs on three walks, a single and hit by pitch, along with an error, wild pitch and passed ball. The Lady Pirates had the bases loaded with one out when Franklin re-entered the game in the circle.
Franklin struck out the last two batters of the end to end the threat and retired the side in order in the seventh for the win.
Mitchell said Franklin’ performance shows why her nickname is ‘Mad Dog.’
“If you know what a mad dog is, that’s just what it is,” Mitchell said. “They got out there and get bases loaded and I had to bring Angel back in and she did her thing.”
Mitchell understands the rivalry between the sister schools even though they are in different districts in Class 6A. Mitchell played baseball at Putnam City West before playing at North his senior year.
“PCO’s always is a rival and vice versa,” Mitchell said. “I got friends and it’s just now it’s a friendly thing. We all joke around, you know, football they got us this year, and then this year we able to get them in softball.”

Putnam City coach Brooklyn Sparkman struck a different tone with her young squad after the game.
“The outcome was the product that we put on the field,” Sparkman said.
Sparkman saw a difference in her team as they warmed up. The problems continued with communication breakdowns and other struggles.
“We were searching and fighting for outs because we didn’t know what we were doing with the ball that was hit to us,” Sparkman said.
Sparkman didn’t take solace in the sixth inning rally for the Lady Pirates.
“They just have to understand that they can’t wait until the sixth or seventh ending to get something started. It’s it’s kind of too late in the ballgame at that point, especially when you’re down seven, eight, nine runs,” Sparkman said.
