BETHANY – Freshman Shayne Vonfeldt picked up another race win. This one was a little closer to home.

Vonfeldt won the girls 2-mile run against other 2A-4A runners at the Bethany Invitational Saturday (Sept. 14) at Eldon Lyon Park.

Vonfeldt, who won the 2-mile race in Bridge Creek Aug. 24, won her home race with a time of 12:20.03.

“Fantastic run by Shayne yet again,” Bethany coach Zac Coulson said via text. “She was patient at the start and then set the tone and pace the rest of the way.”

Sophomore Ava League finished 10th, her first top-10 finish with a 13:42.82.

“I am incredibly proud of Ava League,” Coulson said. “Another great race and set a massive PR (personal record).”

Coulson highlighted senior Gracie Sparks (15th, 13:59.41) and freshman Jocelyn Balderas (18th, 14:09.90) and noted that the squad had four runners in the top-20.

As a team, Bethany’s girls finished second to Southwest Covenant.

The Bethany boys were paced by Artur Calderon. The sophomore finished fifth with a time of 17.09.70 in the Boys 5K (2A-4A Division).

“Placing fifth was so great to see, and I believe he had more in him too, and he will learn that about himself each race,” Coulson said of Calderon.

Sophomore Oliver Thompson placed eighth (17:40.28) and freshman Sayler Stayton placing 14th (18:00.05).

“It was great to have three runners in the top 15,” Coulson said. “The boys ran solid today.”

Coulson also praised sophomore Clay Powell (27th, 18:46.19) and freshman Aiden Donoghue (28th, 18:48.51) saying the duo was “pushing each other the whole race.”

As a team, the Bethany boys finished third, behind first-place Casady and runner-up Southwest Covenant.

In addition to competing, the Bethany runners had a different experience in hosting their own meet.

“Hosting a meet is a lot of work leading up to it, the kids probably didn’t get the amount of sleep they wanted last night, but they still showed grit and heart,” Coulson said.
