OKLAHOMA CITY – Putnam City North looks to extend its playoff streak to five seasons. The Panthers begin the season at home Friday (Sept. 6) against 5A Shawnee.

The Panthers went 4-7 a season ago and 3-4 in 6A-II District 2. North fell in the first round to Bartlesville, 45-14.

“We have had a great off-season. We’ve focused on wanting to be a player-led team and the players have embraced it,” Putnam City North coach Derek Lane told West Metro Sports. “We have had numerous guys step up into leadership roles, both seniors and underclassmen. I believe if we can stay healthy we have a chance to do something special.”

North will have a new quarterback after Joshua Lombard transferred to Putnam City. Junior Mason Jones will take over that spot. Jones comes to North from Bishop McGuinness. He completed a 51-yard pass against Stillwater in scrimmage action.

Another newcomer is senior Kyran Axtell. Axtell is a defensive back and wide receiver.

“Kyran has came in and has made an immediate impact on our team,” Lane said. “He is a good leader and a great teammate. I believe he has a chance to have a big year on both sides of the ball.”
