SAND SPRINGS – After six scoreless innings, Charles Page High School (Sand Springs) walked off Putnam City North, 1-0, Thursday (Sept. 5) in 6A-2 matchup.
North junior Jayda Stevenson scattered three hits through the first six innings in the scoreless game.
“(Stevenson) came to play today and the chemistry she has with our catcher Savannah (Martinez) was spot on,” North coach D’Antae Mitchell said via text.
“The first two innings we were trying to find the umpire strike zone and once we found it after two innings (Stevenson) was rolling and had 7k’s against a tough Sands Spring team,” Mitchell said.
Each team had opportunities to break the scoreless tie. The Sandites left eight runners on base through six innings.
Until the seventh inning, Stevenson and North got out of each jam. In the first inning, Stevenson got a bases-loaded strikeout. In the fifth with runners at second and third, she struck out another batter and coaxed a groundout to end the inning.
North left three runners on base in the game. The closest to a run scoring for the Lady Panthers came in the second inning when Martinez singled to center field to lead off the inning. sophomore Kayla Orton moved Martinez to second base with a sacrifice bunt.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Sandites earned the win with a double and two singles in a row for the walkoff win.
Mitchell praised his defense. He compared the job outfielders Kylee Smith (senior), Monica Coats (senior) and Orton did to a “no-fly zone.” Mitchell also praised the infielders: senior Raya Shawareb, junior Mikala Coats, freshman Kayleigh Andrews and senior Aubrey Miller.
“I’m so proud of the girls because we are getting better every game!” Mitchell said.
