EL RENO – Putnam City North broke a seven-game losing streak, beating El Reno, 3-1, Tuesday (Sept. 3).

“This was a team win! Putnam City North coach D’Antae Mitchell said. “We have been struggling scoring and shooting ourselves in the foot and the girls figured it out and dug deep to get that win. Let me tell you, El Reno played hard. They are a good team and well coached team.”

The Lady Indians took an first inning lead on an RBI-groundout and held the lead until the fifth inning.

El Reno had chances to extend the lead in the second inning with a runner at third base. Senior Monica Coats got a strikeout to end the inning. In the fourth inning with runners at second and third, Coats got a lineout double play to end the threat.

In the fifth, the Lady Panthers went to work. Senior Angel Franklin reached on an infield error and moved to second on another error. She scored on a groundout to tie the game at 1-1. Coats walked and later scored by stealing home. North led, 2-1.

After Coats worked around baserunners in the bottom of the fifth inning, North added an insurance run.

In the sixth inning, senior Raya Shawareb singled to center. She moved from first to third on a single by sophomore Kayla Orton. Shawareb then scored on a passed ball to make it 3-1.

In the seventh inning, El Reno made one more push after Coats got two quick outs. With runners at first second, Coats got a groundout for the win.

“Our defense played well for Coats and that last inning she went to work and had that look in her eye like ‘I got this,’ ” Mitchell said.

Miller, Coats, sophomore Savannah Martinez, Shawareb, Orton and Franklin each had singles in the win.

Coats scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out four batters.

UP NEXT

North (3-7, 2-4) travels to Sand Springs (5-5, 2-1) for a 6A-2 matchup. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
