KINGFISHER – Bethany opened its softball season with a 15-2 win over Kingfisher Tuesday (August 13).

The Lady Bronchos (1-0) collected 14 hits in the run-rule win in five innings.

Bethany busted open a 2-0 game with seven runs in the top of the second inning. Junior Alyssa Daniels lined a double to left field to lead off the inning. Senior Ireland Riley laid down a bunt single to third base, moving Daniels to third. Junior Emma Buxton’s groundout to first scored Daniels.

After Riley stole third base, junior Madison Bibbs’ infield pop up went for a single, scoring Riley. Sophomore Jules Barger added another infield single. Junior Berkley Johnson singled sharply up the middle, scoring Bibbs to extend the lead to 5-0.

Sophomore Ella Davis was hit by a pitch. Bethany began to take advantage of Kingfisher miscues. Junior Paige Sechrist, Daniels and Riley each reached base on errors (Kingfisher finished with four errors total). In between two of the errors, sophomore Grey Williamson added a walk and the Lady Bronchos had a 9-0 lead.

Bibbs went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and two runs batted in. Barger also went 4-for-4, scoring three times and driving in three runs.

In all, six Lady Bronchos got a hit in the contest.

“It was real good for us to come out in the first game of the season and hit the way that we did,” Bethany coach Booker Blakley said via text. “The girls put themselves in great situations and we really emphasize putting the ball in play and that came with a bunch of success today.”

Sechrist earned the win in the circle, striking out six and scattering five hits in five innings. The right-hander allowed only three hits through the first three innings. She struck out six batters.

“I thought Paige handled herself well in the circle,” Blakley said. “There are a few things we would like to correct and do better, but overall she gave herself a great opportunity to get a good result.”

UP NEXT: Bethany has its home opener Thursday (August 15) against Bishop McGuinness. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
