MUSTANG – Putnam City held Mustang to its fewest goals in nearly two months but dropped a 1-0 contest to the Broncos Monday (April 29) in the Class 6A playoffs.
The last time Mustang was held to a lone goal was a 1-0 win over Bishop Kelley March 2.
Mustang (15-2) finally broke through with 8:27 remaining in the contest when Bronco junior Aiden Jordan pushed a goal past Putnam City senior keeper Carlos Yanez.
Yanez turned the Broncos away 13 times before the lone goal and kept the Pirates in the contest. Yanez blocked another shot with his fingertips, forcing it off the goalpost. He also made a kick save that prevented another goal with just over two minutes remaining.
Finally, Yanez stopped a penalty kick by Mustang sophomore Aiden Hale to keep the Pirates close.
The Pirates (6-10) didn’t get many opportunities, especially in the second half. Mustang outshot Putnam City 17-6.
The loss ended the Pirates’ best season and first playoff appearance since 2019.
