OKLAHOMA CITY – Mustang used a big second inning and dominant pitching to run-rule Putnam City North, 10-0, Monday (April 22) in a Class 6A District 2 game at Panther Field.
After a scoreless first inning, Mustang seniors Jackson Pickelsimer and Jake Blice hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the second inning. Sophomore Wyatt Wiliiamson added another double The Broncos added a bunt single, a sacrifice bunt and a triple by junior Blaine Fulmer and a six-run inning was underway.
“Real tough game today,” Putnam City North coach Greg Johnson said via text. “The six-run inning was the big turning point. Couple of base hits to get them started then we just struggled to get out of the inning.”
The Panther bats struggled against Pickelsimer, who struck out eight in five innings.
“(Pickelsimer) shut us down and had us off balance the whole game,” Johnson said.
Junior Rocco Carattini singled to right field in the bottom of the third inning for the Panthers’ first hit.
Mustang (21-11, 7-6) added three more runs in the fourth inning, chasing North starter Aaron Wall from the game.
Trailing 10-0 in the bottom of the fifth, North (8-21, 3-10) made some noise trying to avoid the run-rule. Sophomore Gavin Lang and junior Atticus Duffy-Relf both singled, but the Broncos sealed the win.
Johnson sees glimmers of hope despite a three-game losing streak.
“I think our team right now is still close to being ready for regionals,” Johnson said. “Today was obviously not a good representation of that but we will work the rest of this week and next week in preparation to give our players the best opportunity to be ready to compete in playoffs.”
