SHAWNEE – Bethany finished the Bill Tipton Classic on a high note, coming back to rout Class 5A El Reno, 13-4, Saturday (April 13).
Trailing 3-1, the Bronchos (18-10, 11-1 in Class 4A District 1) scored four runs in the the third inning on two hits, two walks, an error, a wild pitch and a hit batter.
Bethany put the game away in the fourth inning with seven runs on three hits, an error, three walks, two hit batters, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly.
Sophomore Karter Thomas went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Junior Charlie Tolle, senior Gavin Finley, junior Andrew Taber and junior Brock Cross each had hits in the game.
After losing the first two games of the tournament, Bethany came back to win the last two games in routs.
“We needed those wins to end the week on a positive note,” Bethany coach Brandon Ruiz said via text. “We had some young arms throw for us and they did a great job challenging hitters.”
Judd Quanstrom, freshman Cooper Willis and Connor Sydnes combined to strike out six Indians in the win. Willis earned the win, allowing one hits and striking out four batters.
UP NEXT: The Bronchos have a huge district series with Blanchard (17-7, 9-1 in Class 4A District 1) starting Monday (April 15).
“This series will determine the district winner, all of our guys are ready to go and we’re ready to compete against a good Blanchard squad,” Ruiz said.
The Bronchos will host the Lions Monday at 5 p.m. and then head to Blanchard Tuesday. Severe weather is forecast for Monday. Ruiz said that if Monday’s game can’t be played, Bethany will host Blanchard Wednesday.
