MOORE – Putnam City West rode a seven-run second inning to a 14-5 win over Southmoore Friday (March 29).
The Patriots (2-8, 0-6 in Class 6A District 1) took advantage of four SaberCat walks, and error and a pair of singles to turn a 1-0 Southmoore lead to a 7-1 West advantage.
The SaberCats scored three runs in the bottom half of the second inning to make it 7-4.
West extended the lead in the fifth, on a triple by senior Rico Hamilton. Hamilton later scored on a passed ball to make it 9-4, West.
Another passed ball in the sixth scored sophomore Zeke Hernandez, running for senior Jaxon Hyde-Herrera who was one of three Southmoore walks in the inning.
In the seventh, West put the SaberCats away for good, plating four runs. The Patriots had a pair of singles, three walks and took advantage of two errors.
In all, Southmoore (4-9, 2-4 in Class 6A District 2) committed six errors and SaberCat pitching issued 14 walks in the game.
Saucedo went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an run batted in. He also pitched three innings in relief, allowing one hit and striking out five batters to get the win.
After the Edmond Santa Fe game Tuesday, Putnam City West coach Layne Wright had high praise for Saucedo.
“He’s been awesome for us this year,” Wright said of Saucedo who transferred from Putnam City. “(He’s strong defensively, strong at the plate. Kid just grinds. He’s a heck of a lot of fun to coach.”
Mitchell finished with a 1-for-2 day, scoring twice, driving in three runs and snagging a triple.
UP NEXT: The Patriots return to Class 6A District 1 action Monday (April 1) at home against Yukon. The Millers return the favor Tuesday to complete the two-game series. Each game starts at 5 p.m.
