OKLAHOMA CITY – Edmond Santa Fe run-ruled Putnam City West, 15-4, Tuesday (March 26) in a Class 6A District 1 contest.

The Wolves (8-6, 4-2) scored runs in all five innings, pounding out 15 hits and taking advantage of three costly errors and other miscues.

West (1-8, 0-6) also had three passed balls, three wild pitches and handed out seven walks to help Santa Fe.

Putnam City West coach Layne Wright’s message to his team is that it’s hard to compete with miscues like that.

“We need to continue to compete and just take care of the little things,” Wright said. “That’s a hurdle which we keep trying to get over, not letting one mistake lead to four or five or six mistakes.”

The Patriots got on the scoreboard in the second inning on an RBI-single by senior John Rolling, making it 5-1.

West scored three runs in the third inning An RBI-single by sophomore Jayvn Mitchell drove in senior Jaxon Hyde Herrera. Sophomore Zeke Hernandez ran for the catcher Mitchell and scored on two errors by Santa Fe second baseman Nate Deleplank on a ball hit by freshman Aaron De Loera. Senior Rico Hamilton scored on a balk by Santa Fe starter Aidan Alred to cut the Santa Fe lead to 7-4.

Wright praised Hyde Herrera, who went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

“He’s really focused this year on the mental part of the game,” Wright said. “He’s been phenomenal. The things I challenged him on last year, he’s stepped up and then he’s done them this year.”

Hamilton added a 1-for-1 day with a walk and a run scored.

Mitchell finished the game at 1-for-3 and Rolling was 1-for-2. Each had an RBI.

Nathan Vann took the loss. Seen as the Patriots’ ace last year, the senior has struggled this season. Vann allowed 10 hits, seven earned runs and walked four.

“For whatever reason, (Vann) had a slow start, but if we can get him back going and get him back going strong, we’ll be fine,” Wright said.

UP NEXT: The Patriots travel to Southmoore for a non-district game Friday (March 29). First pitch is at 5 p.m.
