WARR ACRES – Putnam City lost a lead due to a big fourth inning from Del City, dropping an 11-8 contest Friday (March 15).

“We just didn’t get enough timely hits and then also got to make the routine plays on defense,” Putnam City coach Camden Dennard said. “It’s vitally important.”

The Pirates were held without an extra-base hit. The team committed three errors, a wild pitch and a couple of passed balls when occurred during key situations. Del City also stole 10 bases.

Putnam City (2-5) overcame a 3-0 deficit in the second inning, plating four runs on singles by senior Hunter Andrews, junior JT Twillie, walks by freshman Jared Potter and junior Connor Fast, coupled with with two wild pitches and a Del City error.

The Eagles (3-5) answered with two runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-4 lead.

The Pirates added three runs in bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of two Del City errors (The Eagles had seven in the game), wild pitches and passed balls.

Leading 7-5, things unraveled for Putnam City in the top of the fourth inning.

An error by Andrews at first base was followed by a bloop triple to right field by Ke’Darrius Palmer (which was catchable). There’d be two more singles, two walks from reliever Joshua Potter and two stolen bases en route to five Del City runs, making it 10-7.

The Eagles extended the lead to 11-7 in the top of the fifth, but Putnam City got the run back in the bottom half of the inning. The Pirates loaded the bases with Andrews reaching on an error, sophomore Brandon Bennett and Twillie singling. Fast then walked in a run, but that was all PC could muster.

Twille went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Dennard commended Twillie for playing through some pain after getting hit with a ball on his hand.

Junior Lukas Poindexter went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Putnam City’s two wins have come against winless Northwest Classen but Dennard says the team is making progress.

“We still got a long, long ways to go. It’s a grind every day,” Dennard said. “The kids get after it. They give me a good effort”

“We’re a lot further along than we were back in February but we’re making steps forward. They might be baby steps, but we’re making steps forward.”

Dennard highlighted Fast who finished the game with two innings of scoreless relief, striking out four.
