BETHANY – The Bethany Bronchos routed Bridge Creek, 89-50, Saturday (Feb. 24) behind a fast start and 27 points from junior Wyatt Geissler. The win clinched the squad a spot in next week’s Class 4A Area II playoffs in Okmulgee.
Geissler, who drilled seven 3-pointers in the contest, scored 16 points in the first quarter with four treys in the opening period.
“When he’s shooting the ball well, he’s the best shooter in the state,” Bethany coach Brett Cannon said of Geissler.
No. 7 Bethany’s hot start left the No. 13 Bobcats in the dust, outscoring them 39-18 in the first quarter.
Even though the Broncho offense scored nearly 90 points, Cannon singled out his team’s defense.
“That was a big part, we guarded today,” Cannon said. “(Bridge Creek is) a really good team, really good offensive team. They put up a really good numbers offensively and we did a good job of stopping them.”
Cannon credited assistant coach Luke Garza’s scouting report.
“He did a really good job leading that and showing where our guys needed to be,” Cannon said.
Besides Geissler, the Bronchos had three other players in double figures. Junior Aiden Todd had 20 points and 11 asssists. Fellow junior Garrett Johnson added 17 points and six rebounds. Another junior, Jackie Payne, finished with a double-double, 11 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.
While Todd is the focal point for most opposing defenses, Cannon likes to see the offensive balance from his squad.
“Being able for our role players to gain that confidence makes it way easier to Aiden and do his job of being able to score and also facilitate,” Cannon said.
UP NEXT: The Bronchos meet Stilwell Thursday (Feb. 29) in the opening round of the Area II playoffs. The No. 14 Indians (21-5) lost North Rock Creek, 63-49, in the Region A final Saturday (Feb. 24).
