MOORE – Putnam City survived a late surge from Class 4A sixth-ranked Ada to beat the Cougars, 52-49, winning the consolation trophy at the John Nobles Invitational at Moore High School Saturday (Jan. 20).
The Pirates (6-10) led by seven points with a minute left, but the Cougars (12-3) hit late free throws and forced Putnam City turnovers to make it a one-possession game with one second left.
The Pirates chose not to guard the inbounds player, instead double-teaming Ada’s Devon Maccollister. The Ada senior took the inbounds pass and lofted a contested 3-pointer over two Pirate defenders that was short to seal the win for PC.
Pirate junior JaColby Williams scored a game-high 17 points, hitting big shots in the fourth quarter. Senior BenThompson added 10 points (eight in the first half).
Maccollister led the Cougars with 14 points. Junior Keith Cook had 12 points while senior Carter Colombe added 11 points.
UP NEXT: The Pirates host eighth-ranked Edmond Memorial Friday (Jan. 26) in a return to Class 6A District 3 play. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
