MIDWEST CITY – Bishop McGuinness edged Putnam City, 47-46, Friday (Jan. 19) on a free throw after time expired at the Titan Classic at Carl Albert.

Tied at 46 with :14 left, the Fighting Irish set up their offense for a final shot. Sophomore Kaylee Perkins hoisted up a 3-pointer just before the buzzer but had her shot blocked by Putnam City junior Kayla Hill.

Officials called a foul on Hill, her fifth, allowing for two free throws with no time remaining in regulation for Perkins (as they had ruled she was over the line). Perkins missed the first shot, but sank the second to seal the win.

The Lady Pirates (6-10) fell despite 24 points from Hill.

Hill scored 12 points in the first quarter alone, but spent much of the second and third quarter on the bench after picking up two quick fouls.

Bishop McGuinness (9-6) couldn’t capitalize, going cold from the field, allowing PC to gain a four-point lead at halftime, 28-24. McGuinness didn’t score a field goal for nearly 12 1/2 minutes from the 2:27 in the second quarter until the 6:58 mark in the fourth.

Putnam City, minus Hill for much of that time, didn’t take advantage as McGuinness hit five free throws over the stretch and cut the deficit to three to start the fourth quarter.

The Irish got the offense going in the fourth and opened up a five-point lead with 1:04 left. Free throws by junior Paishintz Booker, Hill and a bucket from freshman Ace Engmann tied the ballgame at 46-46, leading to the final sequence.

Engmann finished with seven points (five in the fourth quarter).

UP NEXT: Putnam City will meet Epic Charter School in the seventh place game Saturday at 11 a.m.
