WARR ACRES – Putnam City edged Enid, 49-47, Friday night (Jan. 12) in a Class 6A District 3 contest.
“We finding a way to put the pieces together,” Putnam City coach Porsche Young said. “We’re growing each and every day as a team. We’re just trying to find our identity right now. And if we continue to do what we’re doing, and we’re gonna be okay.”
The Lady Pirates (6-8, 3-3) overcame a slow start and the lead changed hands several times from the second quarter on.
Enid took a four-point lead in the fourth. The Pirates tied the game at 45 with 3:28 left on a putback by junior Destinee Hunt.
Putnam City would take the lead for good with 2:13 after junior Kayla Hill grabbed a defensive rebound and took it the other way, splitting two defenders to give the Lady Pirates a 47-45 lead.
Enid (6-8, 2-5) had another opportunity to take the lead after the basketball went through Hill’s legs in the front court. Freshman Ileeya Combs grabbed a rebound from an Enid corner 3-point shot with 1:08 left.

Putnam City played stall-ball and Enid was forced to foul. After junior Paishintz Booker hit 1-of-2 from the free throw line, the Pacers answered with a bucket from senior guard Jasia Malolo to cut PC’s lead to 48-47.
After Enid fouled Combs, she hit 1-of-2 foul shots with :05 remaining. The second shot missed and Booker wrestled for the rebound with an Enid senior Kyra Criss. Booker threw it off Criss’ foot out of bounds to give the Lady Pirates the possession and the win.
“Paishintz today was our difference maker,” Putnam City coach Porsche Young said. “She is what a Lady Pirate is supposed to be. The way she carries herself, the way she embodies, coming out here every day and working hard.”
“(Paishintz) is the one that put in extra work. Every single day. Practice after practice. She’s staying about an hour later. So patience like she’s our difference maker,” Young continued. “She’s our captain and she’s gonna hold this team together. She is our glue.”
Hill and Booker each scored 12 points for PC. Sophomore Tatum Baker added nine points off the bench. Combs finished with seven points.
