WARR ACRES – Enid opened up a tight game with Putnam City in the fourth quarter, wining 61-51 Friday (Jan. 12) in a Class 6A District 3 game.
Both teams were tied at 42 entering the fourth quarter. The Plainsmen (7-5, 4-3) went on a 9-0 run over 3-minute span. Putnam City cut the lead to six points (55-49), but couldn’t get enough stops to come back.
“Just had some defensive breakdowns, an offensive rebound, simple putback, just got away from us defensively,” Putnam City coach Garland Parks said.
Putnam City senior forward Ben Thompson scored 20 points, draining four 3-pointers between the second and third quarters.
Getting the ball into Thompson’s hand was something Parks was trying to do.
“(Thompson) played a pretty good offensive game for three and a half quarters. I think he took some questionable shots late,” Parks said. “We just have to get better, to make better decisions.”
Junior DJ Stephens added 10 points in the loss.
Enid had three players in double-figures with junior guard Zyire Allen scoring 22 points, fellow junior guard Jonathan Reeded added 20 points and 6-foot-8 junior forward Tre Davis finished with 10 points.
UP NEXT: The Pirates travel to play U.S. Grant Tuesday (Jan. 16) in another district contest.
